We are always so excited to receive testimonials from our awesome clients. Here is our latest review from home birth parents Amanda + Dave. I should mention that Dave caught his sweet little baby.
From the moment my boyfriend and I first met Marlo, we knew that she was the perfect doula for us! We were looking for someone who was knowledgeable, experienced, and supportive. It was crucial that our doula support what we wanted for our birth plan and Marlo did exactly that. She helped us have the most perfect and amazing drug-free home water birth imaginable!
Our labour was fast but Marlo was there in an instant and was able to set up everything that was needed for our home water birth despite our labour progressing so quickly. She provided invaluable support for both my boyfriend and I, encouraging us through the whole labour, and in times when I felt like I was going to give up, she took my hand and helped carry me through those intense moments.
Her post-partum support was much appreciated. Whenever we had any questions, we were able to call or email her to get answers. She helped take some of the burden off of us so we could rest and enjoy the time with our new little one. Her wealth of knowledge also helped us get through our breastfeeding issues, as well. Having her as part of our team was one of the best decisions we could've made!
When meeting with our clients for the first prenatal meeting, I always ask both mom and dad to give me 5 words that they feel describe the labour and birthing process. This exercise allows me to meet expectant parents where they're at and it serves as a guide as to how I can help better normalize the birth process for them as well as alleviate any anxiety or fear they are holding on to. A few months back, a dad-to-be listed off the following descriptive words - screaming, pain, anger, emotional woman and blood. Clearly this was a dad that was very worried and concerned about both his wife and the birthing process.
Throughout the remainder of our prenatal meeting, I made it my goal to ease his mindset by sharing stories of normal, physiological birth and by providing them with reading materials that normalize birth such as Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. Following our meeting, I emailed links to videos of peaceful birth videos as well as a link to my Dads and Doulas blog post. It was my hope that by the time the big day rolled around that he would be feeling much at ease with the process and confident in supporting his woman.
Throughout the birth process, doulas provide peace of mind to our clients by walking them through each stage of labour and offering guidance, reassurance and practical solutions in the moment. Turns out for them, they managed beautifully and had the vaginal, hospital birth that they wanted.
Following the birth, I asked dad to provide me with the 5 words that he would now use to describe labour and birth. Here were his words - rewarding, togetherness, powerful, natural and long. Nothing at all what he had pictured in the beginning.

When meeting potential clients for the first time, we are often asked a great number of questions but there seems to be one question in particular that we are always asked by dads and partners. That question is, "How will I still be involved? Will you take my place?"
The simple answer is that we encourage dads and partners to be 100% involved and hands on (to their level of comfort of course) and we will most definitely not take your place! Instead, we are there to enhance your birth experience...to attend in addition to, not instead of you. We are there to provide both mom AND her partner with emotional and information support.
Moms and their partners have a strong bond that no doula can match. We understand that for a woman to progress and "open up" throughout labour, she must be at ease and relaxed, surrounded by those she trusts and feels safe with. It only makes sense that mom is staring in to the eyes, resting in the arms and listening to the encouraging words of her partner.
So let's take a look at a few ways that a doula would help out to ensure that mom's partner will be involved every step of the way:
You see, we are not just there to provide care for moms but rather for the family as a whole. In fact, it's often the dads or partners in the end that are most grateful for our presence at their birth. You have no idea how many times we've heard the phrase, "I don't know what I would have done without you."
