Are you considering having a home, water birth? If so, the first step in preparing is getting a birth pool. There are several birth pools to choose from and every midwife and doula will share their favourites with you. Our personal favourite is the AquaBorn Eco Birth Pool. We favour this pool for a few reasons.
Below we've prepared a list of items that will come in handy and make your water birth go as smoothly as possible.
If you're planning a home birth with us, we include all home birth supplies and the use of our Aquaborn Birth Pool in our Birth Doula package. Set up and take down of the pool is taken care of by us - no fuss and muss for you as we'd rather that you be focusing on the more important things during labour.
If you don't plan to have a birth doula present, be sure to have your pool blown up and ready several days before your anticipated due date. This gives you time to check for holes and to air it out. Be sure to wash out the pool with a mild mixture of soap and water. Do not use bleach as it can compromise the plastic.
Have lots of towels or disposable underpads on hand. We suggest that during labour you make a line of towels from the pool to the bathroom or wherever you think you'll be walking frequently. It's good to make frequent trips to the bathroom to empty out and this way you won't have to worry about your floors.
Keep the pool warm by having a big bucket nearby. Empty out a few bucketfuls every so often to make room for new warm water.
Mom may get chilly when getting in and out of the tub so be sure to have a warm robe or blanket close by.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and best of with your water birth!
