What’s your name?
Dr’s Pavin & Erin

Where in the city do you live?
Burnaby (close to Deer lake)

What’s your nearest and dearest heirloom?
For Erin, it’s a garnet ring given to her by her grandmother who just turned 98. They share the same birth month of January, and this ring was the first piece of jewelry that her grandma ever bought.

For Pavin, it’s also a ring, but it was given by his great-grandpa who helped raise him. It is a gold ring with the family crest and name.
What does your perfect day look like?
Our perfect day starts with some homemade indian chai tea or coffee followed by an early trip to find some nature. After a long walk or hike with our pup Tui, we often find ourselves going for brunch or to a local brewery. The ideal afternoon is spent relaxing in the sunshine at the beach, followed by a BBQ in the evening with friends or family.

How have you found yourself in the pregnancy and postpartum realm?
Coming from two big families, we both knew that helping support growing families was where we wanted to focus our practice.  We were both blown away after taking our first pregnancy and pediatrics course in chiropractic college, and have since continued to study and learn more and more about pregnancy, the birthing process, and postpartum.

What’s your tagline/mantra?
“ Let’s F*ckin Gooo!”
All jokes aside, we’re not sure how it started, but we would use the phrase to amp ourselves up when we first started our business. Till this day, we continue to use the phrase to hype ourselves up, and most importantly, to have fun :)

Tell me more about your offerings!
We offer chiropractic care to all walks of life, young and old. With our passion focused towards families and the pre/post natal community, much of our care revolves around that. Educating and empowering individuals wherever they are in their health journey is something we strive towards. Not only do we offer safe, gentle, and effective care, we also share important recommendations that our clients and families can implement at home right away! Although the majority of our care is at our office, we do offer home/mobile visits dependent on location, timing, and our availability.

Who are your favourite parents and families to serve?
We don’t really have a favourite as we love seeing all parents and families. If we really had to choose someone we had a soft spot for, it would be first time parents.

Now for logistics:
  • What areas of the city do you serve?
Most of our clients are local to East Van but we do have many families that come from Burnaby, the North Shore, New West and even a few that drive in from Whistler.

What’s your name? Jen Basa Kazuta

Where in the city do you live? North Burnaby, BC

What’s your nearest and dearest heirloom? I don’t know if this would be an heirloom, but my daughter and son’s hospital blanket. I don’t think there’s anything more special to me and I often pull it out time to time to sniff it :)

What does your perfect day look like? Waking up without an alarm to glorious sunshine and a strong cup of coffee. Followed by a beach day with my family and a great family meal, catching the last hours of sunlight at the top of our hill with a game of cards.

How have you found yourself in the pregnancy and postpartum realm? Pregnancy, and even more so birth and motherhood, completely transformed me.

What’s your tagline/mantra? This is tough, I feel like I have a few! Pick whichever resonates.

  1. Postpartum is forever. Therefore, don’t rush ;)
  2. Don’t look back, you’re not going that way anymore.
  3. There’s no such thing as ‘bouncing back’ because the old you is gone. In its place is something more beautiful, evolved and complex than you could have ever imagined.
  4. Work smart, not hard.

Bunky Community : Nourish Consultancy

This week we are featuring Lindsay of Nourish Consultancy, to share more about herself, her darling family and her amazing business.

I have personally known her through many seasons in each of our lives, and saw her battle with feeding aversions. The way she  navigated it and how both her and Rigby recovered was a phenomenal thing to be witness to.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Instagram, as she will come on to chat more about feeding aversions, starting solids!
What’s your name?
Lindsay Wark

Where in the city do you live?
We live in Suffolk, UK (but still consider Vancouver one of our homes)

What’s your nearest and dearest heirloom?
A necklace from my Oma - it was hers. I love it.
Picture

What does your perfect day look like?
Starting with a heartfelt workout, open heart, open-mind. Followed by making breakfast for the kids, while consuming pots of coffee and discussing our plans for the day. This usually includes, walks, forts, playing dolls and pretending we are transformers or superheroes at all times. Finished with a lovely glass of wine and a movie! Oh yes, wonderful.

I’ve usually got some sort of client call or comms tucked in there, to mix things up! I love talking baby!
How have you found yourself in the pregnancy and postpartum realm?
Absolute bliss during my first pregnancy and postpartum. The second pregnancy was different, but not terrible. A few medical conditions to handle at the end, but I had a lot of support and guidance from the wonderful Emma Devin and our midwives at Strathcona Midwifery Collective. Postpartum was awful, to say the least. At the tender age of 3 weeks, my new baby girl stopped eating willingly, which is how I’ve come to create Nourish to this day. Anxiety, stress, depression - you name the negative postpartum signs - I had them.

What’s your tagline/mantra?

Professionally - It is your job to offer your baby nutritious meals. It is your baby’s job to decide how much they will eat.

Life - Push through the pain because pain is temporary.

Tell me more about your offerings!
Like you, I am a parent. I would go to the ends of the earth for my babies.  I was heartbroken, afraid and desperate to help my baby who faced a behavioural feeding aversion.

My journey to find help took too many wrong roads including over-diagnosed medical conditions and doctors not truly listening.

I created NC for parents who are struggling with their baby who will not eat and has no medical reasoning for it. My experience is first hand and my consultancy continues to support parents around the world. I am not a doctor. I look holistically at your baby and provide a bespoke feeding plan to support your baby’s eating habits.  From that point, we can work together to find peace, joy, and freedom from feeding aversion.

Who are your favourite parents and families to serve?
Any parent knows they are entrusted with an inborn ability to feed their child. When your heart and soul refuses to take your breast, a bottle or solids from you - you are quickly devastated and heartbroken. You begin to push said food onto your child because that is what your medical team has told you to do. Increase the numbers, watch the scales, track the input and output. Your world becomes fixated on charts, graphs and doctor’s appointments. I cannot help but feel all the familiar feelings come rushing back to me, as I too have a similar story. The work I do is for the parents, to show them they are not to blame and teach them new laidback approaches to feeding their baby. The program is life-long and I truly love when a family sees that and implements into their world.
Now for logistics:
  • What areas of the city do you serve?
International baby - 100% virtual. I’ve worked with clients in Canada, UK, USA to Singapore and South Africa. Unfortunately, baby’s across the globe are developing feeding aversions.

  • How do bookings work?
Through my website - you can book a free 20-minute connect call. If we believe we are the right fit for each other, you can book your desired program also through the website.

Bunky Community : Oh Baby Nutrition

Welcome to our latest feature, community interviews! Where we took the time to meet with practitioners in our community that we love and trust. Finding out more about what makes them tick, and how they serve our Bunky families.

What’s your name?

Carley Mendes

Where in the city do you live?
East Vancouver

What’s your nearest and dearest heirloom?
Oh hmm, I can’t even think of one. I’m terribly unsentimental.

What does your perfect day look like?
My kids letting me sleep in while my husband cooks me breakfast. It basically doesn’t matter what happens after that.
How have you found yourself in the pregnancy and postpartum realm?
I've always been in absolute awe of pregnancy in general. My mother spoke highly of her own pregnancies and instilled a deep reverence in me from a young age. As a teenager I started to become fascinated with the effect that nutrition has on our health. Around then a close friend became pregnant and had a health worker visit her home to discuss prenatal nutrition. I remember thinking… wow, this woman gets to talk about nutrition and support pregnancy. What a spectacular job. It really stuck with me that this would be the most wonderful and fulfilling thing that I could devote myself to—nourishing mama and baby through pregnancy and postpartum. It’s when nutrition matters most.

What’s your tagline/mantra?
One of my favorite quotes is by Jabina Coleman: Everyone wants to hold the baby, but who will hold the mother?

And also anything and everything from Ina May.

Tell me more about your offerings!
I’ve created the Oh Baby guides to help parents nutritionally support pregnancy and babies. Googling “what to eat during pregnancy” or “how to start solids” is a painful process. These guides were designed to provide all the information you’d need in one place.

I also founded Oh Baby Academy, which is an online school that offers programs to become a certified nutrition consultant for pregnancy, postpartum, and babies.

Who are your favourite parents and families to serve?
I just love my job so much and like working with all families. Helping a family start solids is always fun.
Now for logistics:
  • What areas of the city do you serve?
    • Oh Baby is 100% online, so everyone/everywhere!
  • How does working with you look?
    • Select one of my nutrition guides and read it wherever you want, whenever you want.
  • Where can we find you on the web and social media?

Bunky Families : Kat, Kenji & Malia

Meeting Kat and Kenji you can't help but feel their connection, their big smiles and warm attitude bring you right into the fold.

Sharing a meal, watching some hockey and getting to know each other we fell into comfort easily. With every day growing nearer to meeting little Malia.

Getting the call and swinging by in the dead of night, and giving the bad news of "not time yet, go back to bed and rest before working so hard...". I dropped off a TENS and headed for a nap as I had a sense things would turn a corner shortly...
Picture
Picture
As dawn broke and I weaved through the commuter traffic, my knowing was confirmed. Things were rocking and a rolling for Kat. Kenji had to "holy shit!" look on his face of witnessing a powerful active labour and Kat was deep in labour land.

Getting her comfortable in her tub, and seeing if it would change her labour pattern - spoiler alert, she was going full steam ahead. I quickly made the call to Krysta (her cousin and photographer) and her midwives (the awesome team at Canopy).

Colleen rushed over and Krysta got into traffic herself, the team arriving as I was furiously blowing up the birth pool for Kat to get more comfortable in.

With everyone realizing Kat was seeming like she was progressing steadily and rapidly, Colleen gave us the confirmation that we were close to being able to push. Transferring into the birth pool with more room, I gave Kat hip squeezes as she opened and roared powerfully. Kenji staying close by with cold compresses, and such loving words. And Krysta swiftly and so silently, photographing every phenomenal moment.

With a loader and more guttural roar than before, me and Colleen gave each other a look - we know that sound. Kat's body started pushing and taking her over into the next phase. Her amniotic sac emerging, and repeated deep strength into her pushes. Making sure to lean back, and take her breaks when they came.
Picture

After her sac stayed put - even with some poking and checking it out, Malia was determined to be born en caul! Thought to be good luck and happening in only 1 in 80,000 babies - Malia Lois proved to be the one.

Coming right up to Mom and an awe filled snuggle was head for the new family. She was finally here, with the dawn of a new day.

If you are ever in need of a photographer, please do check out Krysta Shore - we absolutely love her! She melts into the background and still manages to get "the shot". Following your flow, energy and birth, what more could you want?
