There was a long period before I found my calling as a doula, where I would constantly take it upon myself to help others who did not ask for my help. Acknowledging consent within lending energy has changed the way I serve all people in my life.
There is a life before parenthood, much like there is a life before becoming a doula. And just like we believe our experiences shape how we parent, it is much the same for doula’s and how we serve. Being able to share our journey into this work with you, is just another way for us to connect more authentically.
With each birth and family I have the pleasure of supporting, I grow a deeper understanding of myself as a helper, as well as the collective power of humankind. It is a great privilege to have curiosity and compassion be at the centre of both my work and my life.
These tools are most beneficial if practised during pregnancy, so taking stock of what feels right for you and implementing it during moments of hardship, frustration, Braxton Hicks and overwhelming thoughts is great to practise. Keep in mind that for some people, you don’t even know what may work for you until the moments in labour present themselves. So don’t pressure yourself into choosing, or practising too much.
Best of luck during your birthing journey, and enjoy finding the power of affirmation!
